Vineyard, California has a population of some 24,836 people according to the census that was taken in 2010, which is an increase in population from some 10,109 people that was reported by the census that was taken in 2000. Vineyard is located in the County of Sacramento.
In spite of the fact that the wine making history in California numerous 100’s of years head start, California still has a rich, deep winemaking past. The fact is that the commercial winemaking legacy in California dates back much further than most wine consumers know, which is full 100 years prior to the 1960’s when winemaking in the Napa Valley became so popular.
During the middle 1800’s, prospective gold miners came back from their exploits in mining for gold and the mountainous coast where grapevines were being planted all over California, especially around the emerging settlements of San Jose and Los Angeles, where growing populations of grapes required agricultural support in order to survive.
Generally organized by Italian and French descendants, those first plantings grew rapidly into a thriving that was primarily concentrated on quantity. However, as the population in California exploded, property owners were able to make much more in the way of lucrative returns when they planted their suburban tract homes over some old vineyards. A man named Matt Ketterman grew up close to the old Mirassou property in East San Jose where, during the 1850’s, his family became shepherd. In fact, Kettmann Road stretches to Aborn Road, which cuts across the property containing an old vineyard.
During the 1980’s, Mr. Ketterman rode his bike as a kid on dirt roads past the twisted grape vines. These days, cars zoom all-around what was the old vineyard that is currently a townhome subdivision and a shopping mall. The structure of the winery itself has been preserved as a kind of landmark.
Gratefully, not everything was destroyed. Some of these almost forgotten vineyards are still around and offer some distinctive grapes with many different varieties with over a century of grape vine age.
There is an ever-increasing respect for these grape vine survivors. This is at least true for those wine connoisseurs who still value what the old grape vines can offer. Where there is an age where the concept of terroir and localism are currently trending, the marketplace will be every-increasingly receptive to exploring these wine bottles of history. This movement is particularly strong in the northern stretches of the Central Coast, especially in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the neighboring southern Santa Clara County. For example, the Uvas Creek area between Gilroy and Morgan Hill is experiencing resurrection with numerous wineries that are open for wine tasting next to Watsonville Road, where originally, Mission grapes were grown by Spanish friars a long time ago.
This is a wonderful location to discover the flavors of old vine Carignan and Charbono, although there is a considerable variance in quality. The bottlings of these grapes from Sarah’s Vineyard, Fortino, and the Aver Family have been enjoyed by wine lovers from all over.
However, maybe the most promising is that this following generation of winemakers will embrace these old vines. This is what happened to the Birichino, which is a brand of wine that was started in 2008 by John Locke and Alex Krause, who named the wine Birichino. Both of these men worked for a Mr. Randall Grahm at the Bonny Doon Vineyard.
Utilizing grapes primarily from the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s vineyards, they could produce amazingly fascinating wines frequently, as opposed to those that area rather elegant and light, which is contrary to the normal credence that old grapevines yield rich fruit bombs. Many wine lovers enjoy Zinfandel wine produced by St. Georges Vineyard, which, in 1922, was planted by a person who sold alcohol during prohibition commonly referred to as a bootlegger. The Grenache wine that was produced by the Besson Vineyard that was planted in 1910, was quite intriguing.
Some people believe that vineyards frequently behave much the same as people. In their youth, they tend to have an abundance of energy in their youth that is sometimes not focused very. This carelessness usually get worked out in time, and it can be determined that the vineyards that have survived 93, or 105, or 129 years also bear witness to the fact that numerous generations of winemakers have considered that are there is some slipshod wine making work, which is usually corrected and then started the vineyards, so that Alex Krause and John Locke also consider themselves as wardens for the future of wine.
Many winemakers consider themselves to be very lucky to have the capable to work with these old grapevine locations, and also believe it to be an obligation to ensure that they remain valued and viable for the future generations of winemakers that will follow.
Wine lovers can obtain a bottle of any old-vine California such as a bottle of Birichino wine, and sip some California State history. The bottom line is that the suitability of any particular variety of wine is worth keeping around.
