Although a considerable amount of growth has occurred within the past 30 years, the City of Rocklin, California has a long history. In 1864, Rocklin was first acknowledged as a terminus for the transcontinental railroad. Granite mining also started around this the same time. The year 1893 brought the incorporation of Rocklin at the time when there was a significant amount of granite mining and railroad activity. In Rocklin some 22 quarries were in operation by 1910 and, almost some 2,000 railroad train carloads of granite were shipped out of the settlement to become the buildings and a portion of the state capitol building in San Francisco in 1912.
The was Spring Valley Ranch, which is located just north of Rocklin, was established by the Whitney Family in 1855. The Whitney’s ranch included many different agriculture products as well as sheep. Through the years, some 12 granite bridges and some 25 miles of crushed stone roads, barns, stables, and housing for some 200 ranch hands along with their families were all built on this expansive 30,000 acres, which is currently considered to be the first developed property in Rocklin.
As the expansion of suburban communities from Sacramento to the northeast resulted in the growth of the housing market in Rocklin from the late 1950’s through the early 1960’s, Eventually the Whitney’s ranch was eventually subdivided and sold off to many different development interests. The development of the Sunset Whitney neighborhood, which is the direct result of the development of the Sunset Whitney neighborhood, positioned around a beautiful golf course is the direct result.
Rocklin realized the advantages of land that attracted high-tech companies and other industries to the area along with a lower cost of living during the 1980’s. This resulted in an expansion of residential and commercial development, which included the Stanford Ranch, which is a 3,000-acre master planned community, which had also been a portion of the Spring Valley Ranch. With additional master plan areas including Whiney Ranch, which is some 1,300-acres and Whitney Oaks, which is some 1,000-acres resulted in a steady period of growth that continued in Rocklin.
The community or Rocklin has preserved several of the original bridges that were made from granite and used to cross across creeks in the Spring Valley Ranch and has parks designed for these bridges as Rocklin has advanced.
Rocklin is currently getting close to the end of its growth stage. With no opportunities for annexation, not many undeveloped parcels of land, leaders of the community have shifted their emphasis to long term sustainability from one of growth. Rocklin needs to be sure that the high quality of life in the community is sustainability in the following years. This change in emphasis requires thinking in a new way, and alternative methods of accomplishing projects but to also provide for new opportunities.
Part of the model in the long‐term for sustainability is to start where it all started, which is Historic Rocklin and downtown are ready for redevelopment and other opportunities. There are still quarries on the landscape,
The early gold miners went thru the gold mines that were located just east of Sacramento region, close to the Rocklin area. The area made up Digger Pine trees and woods comprised of oak trees. In this region valleys were formed from the hills that grass covered. Many of the local Indian tribes that lived in this region and hunted small game for food and used the berries, pine nuts, and other plants that are natural to the region for food.
The gold rush that occurred from 1849 through 1850 had slackened, and businessmen were looking for a business venture. Once he saw the boulders of granite located over the ground in the Rocklin region, Mr. Hathaway elected to start a quarry from 1860 through 1861 since it was necessary to have granite blocks for the construction of the State Capital in California. The location of the first quarry was adjoining to the vast outcropping of granite that remains next to the west side of Pacific Street close to where Pacific Street joins Ruhkala Road. This early quarry provides some of the early first granite as a portion of the base part of the State Capital in California.
Oxen drawn wagons hauled the first loads of granite down the road past the current city ball park and across Antelope Creek and then ongoing towards the current community of Roseville. This road became so treacherous in bad weather that a new road had to be constructed down the current Ruhkala Road and the ongoing to Secret Ravine Creek at what is currently known as China Gardens. Next, a road was cut throughout the lava rock to the apex of the hill where the Roseville reservoir is currently located. There the road that shadowed the lava top towards Sacramento remaining just east of the Roseville region, and in some locations is still visible.
