In 1861, the name of Loomis, California was changed to Smithville by the Placer post office that was opened in the area. Then in 1862, it was again changed it to Pino, and the Southern Pacific Railroad finally arrived in Loomis in 1890. The Post office and the railroad determined that the name of Pino was being confused with the settlement of Reno. As the result Pino was renamed to Loomis. A man named L. Smith was the namesake of the settlement of Smithville Mr. Smith was one of the most prominent leaders in Smithville.
A man named James Loomis was the namesake of the settlement of Loomis. Mr. Loomis seem to run the entire settlement as postmaster, express agent, railroad agent, and saloon keeper at one time. Loomis was the second largest shipper of fruit in the County of Placer during the 1900’s.
Until 1984, Loomis was still a portion of the County of Placer, which was unincorporated. That same year brought the incorporation of Loomis as a town. However, Loomis was running the risk of being annexed by the adjacent community of Rocklin and on order preserve local control partially on the issue of preserving the historic structures that included the Blue Goose fruit packing buildings that is located between the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Taylor Road, voted to incorporate.
In 1852, the settlement got its start when the Wells Fargo and Company was established during the days of the gold rush in California. The company gained control of the operation over the western half of the Pony Express, a few years later and the company started shipping packages between the American West and East coasts.
The Cleary Creek Commercial Company was established by a man named Lee Loomis in 1905.
