Orangevale, California is located some 23 miles east of the California state capital of Sacramento in the County of Sacramento. Also close by are McClellan and Mather Air Force Bases, Douglas Aircraft, and Aero-jet-General. This makes Orangevale a natural place to live and still be within easy commuting distance in a casual county environment.
These softly rolling hills were covered with trails only made by plentiful small animals and deer as well as groves of oak trees some 150 years ago. Then the prospective gold miners from back east, China, Europe, the Mexicans, and the Spanish arrived in the area. After Spanish land grants were sold and subdivided, farmers and cattle ranchers started traveling from all over the USA on the new transcontinental railroad.
Originally known as Orange Vale, Orangevale became known for its numerous orange groves that occupied in the large agricultural region called the San Juanita Grant by the 1884 Mexican government. The first plot that was filed for the region was dated 1888 at the Sacramento recorder’s office. Another plot was recorded in 1895, which showed a network of streets using the name of the Orange Vale Colony.
Although many people still refer to the community as the vale, eventually Orange Vale came to be known as Orangevale. As the result of the ever-increasing number of white pioneers that settled in the area, Orange Vale became an extremely successful while during these years, many other settlements in California were failing. What made the difference was the availability of water. In the eastern location ditches that were ready made that were dug on the Mississippi Bar for placer mining were a natural requirement for the irrigation of growing plums, peaches, and numerous other fruits, vineyards as well as for the groves of oranges.
In 1894 Orangevale won first place for its general exhibit of oranges in bud in San Francisco at the Midwinter Fair. For years, Orangevale had the odd reputation for not having a particular specialty. However, in Orangevale, there were lemons grown that were just as good as those lemons grown in Santa Barbera, Oranges grown that were just as good as those oranges grown in Riverside, apricots grown that were just as good as those apricots grown in Santa Ana and prunes grown that were just as good as those prunes that were grown in Santa Clara. It was obvious that of the all the high-quality fruits that were grown in California could also be grown in Orangevale.
However, in 1930 a devastating frost struck the orange groves, and wiped the orange groves out. But some other agriculture continued and Orangevale continued to progress and grow steadily as a quiet rural community.
An ever-increasing number of people continued to arrive on Orangevale as the result of its modern schools, growth of the industries in the county, the close proximity to mountains and lakes, its recreational opportunities, and because of the natural beauty of the region. People of all ages are thriving. New churches have been established. Streets have been blacktopped and widened. There has been a continuing increase in the number of schools.
In a strange way, this abrupt urbanization has made many residents of Orangevale interested in the olden days of this much wanted region. A man named John Caldwell It was than a hundred years ago that John Caldwell tested the navigability of the American River in his steam driven ten HP boat some 125 years ago in 1884. Two of the desperados of the olden days named Joaquin Murrieta and Tom Bell sought refuge in the Stone Corral during periods of robbing and plundering and robbing on the Auburn-Folsom Road.
There are many different and an abundance of recreational activities in and around Orangevale. Many of these year-round activities are very popular and include horseback riding, picnicking, fishing, and boating.
