Although it has been said that Elk Grove, California has become so large that the center of the community no longer exists even though Old Town is still considered the real Oak Grove, the center of Elk Grove moved no less than three times. The first hotel in Elk Grove was a stage stop in a single brick building, and hotel that, in 1850, was constructed by a couple named Sarah and James Hall. It was located in nearly the same location where the replica has been rebuilt that was located at the start to the westward entrance to the Park in Elk Grove. It was located a few yards west where the northern lane of highway 99 was constructed. This was located one mile south of what is currently known as the intersection of Highway 99 and Elk Grove Boulevard.
In 1850 the hotel was constructed from solid brick and the walls on the lower story were three-bricks thick while on the second story the walls were two-bricks think. Until the building was demolished the building was occupied and in good condition. Mr. Hall and his family arrived in California a opened a hotel during the days of cattle and horse thieves. During the early 1850’s, prior to the Buckner Hotel the hotel had been used as a stage stop for a short time and the hotel had three bathrooms and 13 rooms.
Some of the older residents of Elk Grove remember stories about gunplay as well as the story about the 1857 burning if the Buckner that were told to them by their parents. According to a woman named Mrs. Guy Foulks, who born in the 1850’s in the building that was bought by her family, named the Francis Grahams, their ranch included all of land around the Cosumnes River and the Elk Grove Park.
Located on the dairy ranch owned by a man named J. Brown, the original landmark has since been demolished. Mr. Brown believes that dances were held in the upper story as far back as 1882. Mr. Brown and his son named Marion were partners on the ranch, planned to use the same used bricks to construct two modern homes for their families.
The first hotel in Elk Grove was a two-story brick building. A door on the front had side glass panels and led into the vestibule that has a staircase with a rail made from cherrywood that led to the floor on the upper side. The room doors opened on both sides, as well as at the end of the vestibule. Both of the rooms on the side had a fireplace. The room that was used as a dining room was located at the end of the hallway. The kitchen was located on the east wall and was a lean-to. The upstairs had a hall that bisected the Hotel on the south and the north. The bedrooms were in front of the ballroom on the other side and on the front side. There were some 13 rooms in the hotel. The ballroom on the other side. The bathroom and other conveniences were obviously located in the back.
The hotel had wooden columns that supported the balcony and a large wood porch that ran all the way across the front of the hotel. The balcony overlooked Stockton, which came to be known as Highway 99n and had an Ornate molded blister that surrounded the balcony. French doors were on the upper story that led onto the balcony. The windows and doors all had shutters and were inset. The doors were narrower at the top than the bottom and had a pronounced decided bevel on the outer side. Stables were located across the road from the hotel, which also has a weekly mail service. People who lived on ranches in the local area took the stagecoach there and then walked across the fields to their homes.
Mr. Hall is given the credit for naming of Elk Grove. After he constructed the hotel, he painted an elk’s head on its sign and thereby established the Elk Grove Hotel. However, he had also lived in a town of the same name while living in Missouri. The tax assessment for Sacramento County in 1851 lists James Hall as living in Elk Grove, which is the first recognized indication of the usage of the name Elk Grove. Mr. Hall sold the tavern stand named the Elk Grove House and relocated to Sacramento in 1855. It was quite likely that gold was the motivation that caused the hall family to relocate to the Oregon Trail from the mid-West. The obviously joined numerous gold seekers who were heading toward California and the gold fields.
The community of Elk Grove has a rich history and a bright future. Elk Grove is a wonderful community to live, work, play, visit, and raise a western family.
