About El Dorado Hills

The origins of the historic settlement of El Dorado date back before the 1850’s, when it was recognized as Mud Springs, which was nothing more than a watering hole for livestock next to the road which connected Placerville otherwise known as Hangtown with Sacramento. Supposedly, watering the stock transformed the springs into an area of mud and muck which explains the reasoning for its name. When the seekers of gold pitched their tents close to the springs, the names of some 462 miners were listed in the census that was taken in 1850. In 1851 the Post Office was established.

This population of the location had increased in size to some 2,100 people by 1854. This prompted a man named T. Springer, who was the former editor of the El Dorado Republican in Placerville, to publish the community newspaper. In late 1854, Mud Springs established a Committee of the County Seat and entered a challenge to determine the permanent location of the county seat. Mud Springs balloted between 685 and 679 votes, primarily from Logtown and Mud Springs. The boosters in the settlement determined that the name of Mud Springs would probably invite ridicule and discourage growth regardless of what other advantages the settlement might have. What better name change than to that of the county, which was a name that meant the gilded one or gold. The April 21, 1855 edition of the Coloma newspaper, the Empire County announced name change and the incorporation of the community of El Dorado. This historic community is registered as a Historical landmark in California #486.

What is currently known as the County of El Dorado was once home to the Miwok, Washoe, and Maidu Native Indian tribes, and is also widely known for being the location of the gold discovery of 1848, which that incited the California Gold Rush. El Dorado County was one of the original 27 counties in California established in 1850. Its name is the result of the of the Spanish that means the golden/gilded.

Until its 1861 replacement with the telegraph service, the final sections of the mail route of the Pony Express that ran through the County of El Dorado. These days the Pony Express is covered by U.S. Highway 50. The total area of El Dorado County is some 1,785 square miles, of which some 1,708 square miles in land, and some 78 square miles is water, which is in accordance with the Census Bureau of the United States.

El Dorado County is comprised of mountainous terrain and rolling hills as the result of its location in the Sierra Nevada. The northeast corner is a portion of the Great Basin in the Lake Tahoe Basin. This includes a part of the lake itself. To the west and across the Sierra crest is the location of most of El Dorado County, that is known as the western slope. Part of Folsom Lake is located in the northwestern corner of the El Dorado County.

Much of the county of El Dorado is public land. About 43% of the Eldorado National Forest includes a considerable part of the land area in El Dorado county, mainly on the western slope. The Management Unit for the Lake Tahoe Basin was previously a portion of two other National Forests in addition to the Eldorado National Forests, which comprises much of the land that is located east of the crest. Running through the eastern portion of the County of El Dorado and either next to the Sierra Crest is the Pacific Crest Trail. El Dorado County is home to the Desolation Wilderness, which is a popular destination for fishing, backing, and hiking.

El Dorado is a principally a Republican county in congressional and presidential elections. However, between 1892 and 1952, the county of Eldorado was a stronghold for the Democratic party, with Warren Harding and Theodore Roosevelt being the only two Republicans to carry El Dorado county. However, ever since 1952, El Dorado has only voted Democratic three times: in 1976 with narrow victory for Jimmy Carter, in 1964 with a huge victory for Lyndon Johnson, and in 1960 with a narrow victory for John Kennedy.

El Dorado County is most notably a hub of political concern with the United Nations having a non-binding workable development plan called Agenda 21, which in 2012, was on the County Board of Supervisors meeting Agenda. Concerns included the threat traffic roundabouts and road closures dictated by the U.S. Forest Service. In 2013, some 14 members of the Grand Jury in the County of El Dorado resigned, which forced the Supervising Judge named Steven Bailey to dissolve the plan.

The community of El Dorado, California has a very bright future and a historic past. There are many different things for visitors and their families to do and see here. El Dorado is a wonderful place to live, work, play, visit, and to raise a family.
