About El Dorado Hills

El Dorado Hills is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in El Dorado County, California. El Dorado is Spanish for "The Golden." It has a population of 50,567 at the 2020 census, up from 42,109 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Greater Sacramento region of Northern California. El Dorado Hills is predominantly a wealthy Sacramento suburb. Gold was swept down the South Fork of the American River during the California Gold Rush into El Dorado Hills and Folsom, but farming and ranching took over from gold mining and panning. From 1860 to 1861, portions of two Pony Express routes in this area were preserved as present El Dorado Hills highways. Growth was moderate between the late 1960s and the mid-1990s, as new families relocated from Sacramento, Southern California, and the Bay Area.

El Dorado Hills (EDH), defined by the 2010 census-designated place (CDP), is located between the City of Folsom and the unincorporated hamlet of Cameron Park on the western edge of El Dorado County. Folsom Lake and the South Fork of the American River are the CDP's northern boundaries, with river rafters using Skunk Hollow and Salmon Falls as takeout sites. The southern perimeter of CDP follows railroad tracks historically utilized by the Southern Pacific between the communities of Folsom and Placerville west of Latrobe Road. East of Latrobe Road, the south edge follows the east-west topography. The land area of the 2010 CDP is 48.606 square miles; more than quadruple the size of the 2000 CDP's limits, which were 17.9 square miles.

El Dorado Hills had a population of 50,547 in the United States Census of 2020, with 16,212 homes. It had a racial makeup of 39,636 people (84.1 percent), 1,209 white (2.6 percent), 815 people identified as black or African-American (1.7 percent), 6,964 Native Americans, and Alaska Natives (14.8 percent). There were 404 (0.9 percent) Asians, 1,419 (3.2 percent) Pacific Islanders, and 3,158 (6.7 percent) people of two or more ethnicities. 3,820 Hispanic or Latino people (8.1%) were of any race. While there were other minor changes in racial mix, the proportion of Asian-identified people increased by 6.3 percent in this census compared to the 2010 census. El Dorado Hills is represented in the United States House of Representatives by Republican Tom McClintock, California's 4th congressional district. El Dorado Hills is governed by El Dorado County because it is an unincorporated region. El Dorado Hills is divided into two supervisory districts. John Hidahl represents District 1, and Frentzen represents District 2. Other local agencies provide a variety of services.
