About Davis

An expanse of land next to Putah Creek was inhabited the Puttoy Indians, which were a tribe of the indigenous Patwin people lone before the arrival of white settlers arrived. While this Indian tribe was numerous and health, to population of the tribe decreased significantly as the result of, at least in part, the 1833. It has been speculated by some historians that this epidemic might well have been a type of malaria that was introduced to the region by the trappers who were working for the Hudson’s Bay Company. There were the first pioneers to completely explore the region. A small group of surviving members of the Puttoy Indian tribe had abandoned their villages by 1834, and some left for Mission Solano in what is currently known as the County of Sonoma.

The location of Davis, California is just north of the location of the streambed of Putah Creek, which, in 1850, became the line that was between the Solano and Yolo counties. The immediate Davis area was previously the home of a tribe of Patwin Indians, and presented an abundance of wildlife and plants, which prior to the arrival of agriculture pioneers, hunters, and trappers brought radical changes to the region. In the early 1850s, the agronomy of the rich sandy plains and the raising of livestock in the West Sacramento Valley were lucrative initiatives. There were also numerous European immigrants and Americans pioneers who wanted title to the unverified Mexican land grant upon which the campus of the University of California as well as the majority of the community 779of Davis are located. A couple named Mary and Jerome Davis were prominent among the early pioneers. A man named Joseph Chiles, was one of the trail blazing pioneers in California and in 1849, his cattle interests in the region started. By 1858, the holdings of the Davis family were increased and included some 12,000 acres. However, inadequate transportation services, the Civil War, disease, high interest rates, floods, disease, and drought resulted in financial hardship for the ranchers in California. Once they had sold about 7,000 acres of land to the developers of the California Pacific Railroad, the Davis family relocated to Sacramento in 1868.

Directors of this pioneer railroad line surveyed a trilateral railroad junction, which would play a primary part in the future development of the settlement that would be laid out around it. In 1868, business and residential construction was encouraged when daily railroad service between Davis Junction and Vallejo was opened. The official plat for the settlement covered a 32-block area that bordered on Putah Creek, and was in 1868. The population of Davis was some 400 people in 1870. Street trees were planted and aand was donated for churches and a schoolhouse. The prosperity of a boomtown was present until the volume of local trade was reduced by the subsequent extension of the railroad. During the late 1800’s, the economy of the community was mainly associated with the agricultural development in the surrounding area.

There were only a few citizens who were sufficiently far-sighted to dare hope that the recently established University State Farm might be located close to Davis in 1905. However, where similar committees in some 70 other communities located elsewhere in California failed, a determined seven-man committee of the first Chamber of Commerce succeeded. Several of the local residents contributed to the funding required to purchase of an option on the 779-acre Wright-Hamel-Sparks tract of tract, which was offered to the site selection committee. This was in addition to the option on water rights for the purpose of irrigation. In 1906 after their offer was accepted, residents of Davis celebrated with fireworks and flag-flying. Cleanup Days was rapidly established by the women’s improvement club on order to make the community more presentable for its new function as a university community.

Partially in celebration of the site selection of the University Farm that occurred in 1906, one of the lasting acts of that month was that the name of the Davisville Enterprise was changed to the Davis Enterprise, and the community generally came to be known as Davis. On middle 1907, construction of the first University Farm buildings began and in 1908, first instruction got underway, with some 15 non-degree students in attendance. Also, an important function of the new research and teaching institution that would continue to be under the organizational power of the Agricultural College at the University of California at Berkeley until 1952, were the short courses for farmers.

Under a commission form of government, the year 1917 brought the incorporation of Davis as a city. Street paving, sidewalks, sewers, and fire protection were all high on the list of gravely needed civic improvements. In 1925, a planning commission was developed and in 1927, the first General Plan for the city instituted. A mayor-council type of government was accepted in 1928. The appointment of the first city administrator occurred in 1950, and the position of city manager was introduced in 1965.
