About West Sacramento

West Sacramento, California in located in the County of Sacramento. In 2019 the population of West Sacramento was some 53,727 people which is an increase from the 39,200 people according to the 2000 census. There are many different things for visitors and their families to do, see, and enjoy in and around West Sacramento.

The I Street Bridge has two decks; one for railroad traffic and one for highway traffic, weighs more than seven million pounds, is some 363 feet long, and was constructed in 1911. In order to permit ships to access the Sacramento River, the swing-span bridge pivots some 90 degrees clockwise. Every day the bridge carries around 40 railroad trains and about 10,000 trucks and cars. The community of Sacramento is planning to reroute bicycle, bus, and automobile traffic as soon as 2017, onto a much more modern bridge upriver in coming years. However, even once the new bridge is constructed, railroad traffic will remain on the bridge. Located on the eastern side of the Sacramento River, just downstream of the bridge is an information board that states “Prisoner of the River,” which relates the vessel, LaGrange, which, until it sank in 1859, was a floating prison.

This wooden-framed tin-roofed building was constructed during the Gold Rush period in 1849. This building was the first purposely constructed theater in California. The playhouse is a small white structure that has canvas walls and was originally built some close by saloon owners. The purpose of this saloon was to provide entertainment for the many different gold miners who had flooded into Sacramento. It’s thought that the structure was made from the canvas and the timbers that were taken from ships that had been abandoned in San Francisco. In 1850, the original structure was actually destroyed by flooding although it was intended to be an everlasting building in this fast-growing and new community. In 1974, a replica of the building was reconstructed and it is located within the Old Sacramento Historic State Park. The building and its contents are as nearly original as possible, with only some minor changes. The replica of the floor of the uses asphalt while the floor in the 1849 building was simply beaten earth. The seating was made from wooden benches in the primary auditorium and is currently restricted to an audience of some 150 members, which has a capacity that is much smaller than used to be stuffed into the same space, apparently for safety reasons.

At one time Sacramento was once very disposed to flooding being some ten feet lower than it currently is. It isn’t any wonder then that in the middle 1800 residents were incensed and elevated the old Sacramento to higher elevations. Still at its original elevation is all but one small section.

There is a sunken courtyard in the California State Railroad Museum, which is located just across from the Old Sacramento tourist eating and shopping area. A sign on the railing that surrounds this ten-foot-deep depression specifies that the floor level of the courtyard is at the original level of Sacramento before the 1860’s. The owners of the multi-floor building in Sacramento and simply abandoned the ground floor and built raised sidewalks that were level with occurred on the first floor, after many incidents of serious flooding throughout the 1800’s, and the people who owned the Multi-Floor buildings in Sacramento after simply discarded the ground floors and raised the constructed level of the sidewalks so that they would be raised to just below the level of the new sidewalk, which effectively elevated the entire community,
The Old Sacramento region, which is located next to the Old Sacramento Historic State Park, which is comprised of numerous 1800’s style wooden buildings that have conventional wooden sidewalks. Although some of the original building still remains, many of the buildings are very convincing reproductions. Once rooms on the ground floor, these preserved structures still have very flood prone basements.

A somewhat large and looking it was somewhat a worn-out complex which somewhat smugly offers the inscribed label that says the Locomotive Works of Sacramento and which conceals hides an absolute treasure trove for anybody interested in industrial architecture that dates back to the 1800’s, heavy engineering, or railroads, heavy engineering is located next to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento

This historically important complex comes from small beginnings as the Central Pacific Railroad workshops, and it is frequently simply called the Shops. The lone remaining American railroad structures that were actually still around when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific met in 1869 are located within the Shops. Sometime later, the Southern Pacific Railroad used the Sacramento workshops for nearly 125 years.

The older building, which was constructed on massive redwood piles, in1867 is called the Machine Shop, and has undergone many different expansions several times to meet the requirements of the Shops. Although it isn’t owned, it is currently actively used by the State Railroad Museum and the building houses an enormous range of both diesel and steam locomotives, large machine tools, cabooses and wagons. The newer building, which is closest to the State Railroad Museum, was constructed in 1888 and is known as the Boiler Shop. It continues to be uses and was used for much of the heavier work in the locomotive maintenance and production process.
