About Folsom

Although Folsom, California is one of the oldest communities in Northern California, the current progressive nature of Folsom might give the impression that it is a relatively new community. In addition, Folsom is very proud of its past.

The first known pioneer that explored what is currently known as Folsom arrived in 1827 with a group of trappers. Before then, the only people in the area were the Maidu Indian tribe. Up until the discovery of gold was made in 1848, approximately some 20 miles northward at Sutter’s Mill, trapping furs was the main occupation. Several different settlements were developed next to the American River, which included Prairie City, Negro Bar, and Mormon Island once gold was discovered in the area.

A man named Joseph Folsom, who is the namesake of Folsom, purchased the land in the region and hired an engineer named Theodore Judah to survey it for township and a railroad that was to be named Granite City. However, before he could see the development of his land, in 1855, Mr. Folsom unfortunately passed away. The name Granite City was changed to Folsom in his honor. Mr. Folsom passed away the year prior to the Sacramento Valley Railroad sending the first railroad west of the Rockies between Folsom and Sacramento in 1856. Following the completion of the railroad, Folsom became the transportation hub for the Mother Lode with stage and freight lines that met the railroad. The center for commerce and hotels was Sutter Street.

Between July of 1860 and July of 1861, Folsom was the westernmost terminus for the Pony Express. People were arriving from all around the world to Folsom during the days of gold rush. The fact is that was the world to Folsom. The fact is that had one of the largest populations of Chinese people on the West Coast during the 1860’s.

The community of Folsom experienced many changes that included the Folsom Telegraph that was established in 1856 and has been continuously used ever since, as well as the town newspaper. In 1880, the Folsom Prison was established. In July of 1895, the Folsom Powerhouse was constructed with the hydroelectric power generated by the prison dam, and transmitted electric power some 22 miles to Sacramento. At the time, this was the most extensive overhead transmission of power in the world. In 1895, the Truss Bridge was constructed to span the American River.

Between the 1900’s and the 1940’s, the Rainbow Bridge was constructed in 1919, to span the American River in 1919. In 1930, the Truss Bridge was relocated to the County of Siskiyou in 1930, as it became no longer needed. The year 1945 brought the official incorporation of Folsom as a city. Between the 1950’s and the 1970’s, in order to provide recreation, provide hydroelectric power, and control flooding, the Folsom Dam was constructed in 1955. The previous mining community of Mormon Island was flooded by Folsom Lake. All but a very few farms by the time the dam was constructed remained. The hit song Folsom Prison Blues, which was sung by Johnny Cash put Folsom made Folsom a household name. In 1968, Johnny Cash visited the prison in order to record an album. During this time period, the economy of Folsom was focused mainly around the prison.

In 1984, Intel arrived in Folsom and ushering in numerous new residents, but was slow to improve the local economy. At the time, the campus was located in a very rural location and the building of the campus resulted in the evacuation of a mountain lion family that had made their home where Intel was going to be located. Workers also unearthed the remains of several unknown people during the construction of the on-ramp to Prairie City Road. It is believed that the remains were former residents of the long-abandoned mining community of Prairie City. Intel has since constructed five more buildings and has plans to construct at least two more. The backbone of the economy in Folsom depends on in Intel, who is the leading private employer in the Sacramento area.

During the 1990’s, Folsom saw a staged of rapid expansion, as the Sacramento suburbs spread out to the community. Folsom became a rather affluent community after having once been a sleepy little town. Chain stores and strip malls were developed all over Folsom, l over town, as it became more concentrated, and the population boomed. The Folsom Dam experienced a primary gate failure, which caused a considerable amount of water to be discharged out of the dam before they could repair it, in 1995. The repair work on the dam created many traffic problems and the two-lane Rainbow Bridge became the one and only artery across the river. In 199, the crossing for Lake Natoma was completed, in order to smooth the traffic across the Folsom Bride in order alleviate traffic congestion.
