About Citrus Heights

The settlement of Citrus Heights, California had only a few remote frontier garrisons of civilization and was limited to a thin coastal strip of land next to El Camino Real. Throughout most of this period of time between 1542 and 1848, the Spanish influenced much of the growth within California. One of these garrisons was the very large estate of a Swiss/German immigrant named John Sutter, who, under the condition that he settle twelve other families on the property, was granted almost 84,000 acres of land in the Sacramento Valley. One of these was land subgrants from Mexico, that was initially granted in 1844, was the Ranch Del San Juan, which was an estimated 20,000-acre tract of very fertile farm land. Included in this subgrant was what is currently known as Citrus Heights.

The end of the Mexican/American War between 1846 and 1848 was the result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which was signed in February of 1848 and officially ceded California to the United States. The population of this new territory increased from about 10,000 people in 1848 to about 50.000 people by late 1849 was the result of the discovery of gold and the rush of 1849 that followed. California pushed the American government for admission to the Union as the 31st state in September of 1850. Mexican land grant parcels to California were then subdivided into a smaller American township/county system, and as the result Sacramento County became one of the original 27 counties in California. All throughout the county, Townships were established. What is currently known as Citrus Heights became a part of the County of Sacramento Central Township. When it was originally established this Central Township had no roads, few inhabitants, and no settlements.

When a new shortened road to Auburn found its way obliquely through the township following what is currently known as Auburn Boulevard towards Sylvan Corners, where it turned off in a northerly direction next to what is currently known as the Old Auburn Road, Central Township's isolation ended rather brusquely in 1850. Between early spring and late fall, some freight wagons that were very heavily loaded travelled the dusty road that was headed for Auburn and led to a several way stations on the route, which allowed the teamsters to stop for a good night's sleep.

During the late 1850’s, the early pioneering settlers in the Central Township developed their ranches next to Old Auburn Road. Usually, each pioneering family settled on some 160 acres of land, set about clearing the land for farming, dug a well, and built a barn and a house. As the result of the native oak trees having to be cleared from the land, many of the early pioneering settlers made their living selling cords of firewood to close by Sacramento. Although barley and hay were grown primarily for use as food for their livestock, some of the wheat crops of these early farmers were sold to thriving mills.

Prompted by a man named W. Thomas' assurance that Citrus Heights sufficiently housed enough children to warrant a school district. On the northwesternmost junction of Sylvan Corners the school was built and named Sylvan School. Mr. Thomas donated five acres of property. After the building was completed, it became a religious, social and civic of the community. In conjunction with daily services, church services and community parties were held in the small one room building.

What is currently known as Greenback Lane was once Auburn Road, which is located in the eastern part of the district. Ground was broken for the Central Pacific Railroad in 1863, and in 1864, the railroad was routed through the Central Township. An influx of pioneering settlers was the result of the completion of the railroad through the region, which also increased the exportation of local agricultural crops by local farmers. The need for another grammar school, named the San Juan School located just south of Winding Way, was the result of continuous migration of pioneering settlers to the region.

A gentleman whose name was Cornelius Donahue arrived in the region between the 1860’s and the 1870’s. Mr. Donahue developed a ranch in 1863 near Citrus Heights and then, in 1872, expanded it so that it included the land that now houses both the Birdcage Shopping Mall, and the Sunrise Shopping center. An early pioneering settler named Peter Van Maren was a leading agriculturalist in the area. In 1875, he maintained a very large estate of almost 1,000 acres. When the real estate company of Trainor and Desmond purchased some rather large tracts of vacant land and then subdivided them into 10 lots. in 1910, the quiet pastoral life of the rural Sylvan district underwent a noticeable change. The real estate company renamed Sylvan to Citrus Heights as a publicity scheme in order to attract more buyers. The name remains the same to this day.
