Folsom is located about 24miles Northeast of Sacramento with a total area of 34 Square miles, 31.9 square miles is land, and 2.4 square miles filled with water. The city is known for the Folsom Prison, the famous song "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash, and the Folsom lake.
Folsom was named after Joseph Libbey Folsom, who purchased the Mexican land grant Rancho Rio De Los Americanos from merchant William Alexander who was the heir of San Francisco. Folsom city, which was formerly called Granite City, was home to gold miners seeking their wealth in the foothills of Sierra Nevada. Although only a few could make their wealth, the city developed because of Joseph Folsom's effort to get a railway to connect the town with Sacramento. Granite City was named after Joseph Folsom after his death in 1855. The railway was abandoned in the 1980s but reopened in 2005.
The Folsom Prison was built in 1880 with the agreement between the Livermore family and the state. They agreed to donate land for the prison in exchange for prison labor. The Livermore family planned on building a hydroelectric dam from the American River for a sawmill industry which didn't work out. The dam was then used to supply power to Sacramento, which was established in 1956 and can be found at the southwest wing of the lake.
