Folsom City was incorporated in 1946. The first Europeans came into the area in April of 1827. However, the Maidu Indians were the original inhabitants. Fur trapping was the main occupation until gold was discovered in 1848. Joseph Libby Folsom purchased the land and prepared to build a railway and a township that he intended to name Granite City. Sadly, he died before any of his ambitions could materialize and the area was renamed Folsom in his honor. When the railway was completed, it became a transportation hub to the mother lode during the time of the gold rush and many people flocked to the town. The town experienced many changes in the subsequent years but most significantly Intel was set up in the city in 1984. This prompted thousands of people to move into the area spurring strong economic growth in the area and even presently Intel is a major stakeholder in Folsom’s economy.
The main modes of transport in Folsom are road and light rail. The city’s plan area is specifically designed to encourage people to walk, cycle, take the bus, and carpool therefore there is a great interconnection of the roads in the city. There are no airports in the city and no direct connections to water transport.
According to the city’s 2020 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in the city are Intel Corporation, California State Prison, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Folsom Prison and Mercy Hospital of Folsom. The town has a lot of employment and academic opportunities. The city has an unemployment rate of 4.6% which is lower than the national average of 6%. Future job growth over the next ten years is predicted to be 37% which is higher than the US average of 33.5%.

Some of these are Sandra J Gallardo Elementary School, Russell Ranch Elementary School, Folsom Middle School, Sutter Middle School, Vista Del Lago High School, and Folsom High School. There is also the Folsom Lake College in the city.
Folsom is rich in history, hiking trails, and culture. The city is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and serves as a gateway to the alpine environment to the east. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is just outside the city limits and offers a variety of outdoor activities. Much of the city’s gold rush heritage may still be seen, particularly on Sutter Street and in the neighboring Historic Downtown District. The downtown immerses visitors in the past while appreciating modern conveniences, with stores reminiscent of old-time opera theaters and hotels. Several events and concerts take place throughout the year in this downtown district, in addition to the retail and dining options. The city will always be linked to the state jail that lies within its limits, thanks to a memorable performance by Johnny Cash inside the prison gates. The museum is accessible via the Johnny Cash Trail, a paved pedestrian walkway that spans two gorgeous bridges and features art.
It is also the safest city in the Sacramento region as ranked by the annual Safewise survey. It is clear that Folsom has a lot to offer to both residents and visitors.
