There are a host of reasons why homeowners look to increase the size of their home. Whether it's growing families or new hobbies, adding one or several rooms to your home is an effective and increasingly popular means of increasing your space. When done right, not only does a home addition provide extra space but it adds value to your home and increases its aesthetic charm.

Another increasingly popular avenue homeowners take are ADUs (accessory dwelling units), which refers to a secondary house or apartment that shares the building lot of the original house. ADUs are an efficient use of existing space and are perfect for growing families or for having a dedicated space for hobbies or activities.

If you have extra space at the bottom of your garden, an ADU may be a perfect choice. We pride ourselves in handling every step of the construction process, from design and implementation to clean-up.

About Carmichael

In the early 1900s, an advertisement appeared which stated that lots were for Sale in Carmichael, California with 10% down and terms of $10 per month a 6% interest for 10 acre tracts at a total cost of $1,500This advertisement continued by saying that the property was located in the shelter of rolling foothills, which was frost free and offered woods that were stocked with quail and other game birds, and streams that were stocked with ducks of gun and trout for rod. The man who was selling these properties was named was Daniel Carmichael, the community’s first developer and founder.

In 1909, the headline in the Folsom-Telegraph newspaper was Big Real Estate Deal. The story was about a man named Daniel Carmichael who bought some 2,000 acres of property that consisted of hills and dales with scattered noble oaks. At the time it was believed that he paid from $150,000 to $200,000 for the property. This land came to be known as the Carmichael Colony # 1. These 2,000 acres of land was a portion of the Mexican Grant made to a man named Joel Dedmond for the 20,000-acre Rancho Del San Juan. This colony is bounded by the Fair Oaks Boulevard in the west, Deterting Ranch, currently known as Ancil Hoffman Park in the south, San Juan Ave. in the east, and Lincoln Ave. in the north. The Deterting Ranch is currently known as Ancil Hoffman Park.

Sometime later Mr. Carmichael purchased an additional 1,000 acres that he designated Carmichael Colony # 2. The boundaries of this colony were Arden Way and Sutter Ave. in the north, and Walnut Ave. in the west. This new territory had been a portion of the 44,000-acre Mexican grant made to a man named Eliab Grimes, in 1844, for the Del Paso Rancho. Prior to Mr. Carmichael purchasing the property, Ali Haggin, James Ben, and his Daniel Carmichael associates raised and bred racehorses, that include a winner of the Kentucky Derby named Salvatore, located on a ranch where Del Dayo Estates is currently located.

Carmichael divided the two colonies into 10-acre tracts and then promptly sold them for some $1,500 each. In 1867, Daniel Carmichael born in Atlanta, Georgia and in 1885, arrived in California in 1885. After spending 10 years working at many different jobs that includes bookkeeping and ranching, he developed the real estate organization of Brand, Carmichael, and Curtis. In 1895, this real estate business was developed in the City of Sacramento, was dedicated to the acquisition and establishment and development of the Sacramento Valley.

In 1900, the company was bought out by Carmichael’s partners and came to be known as the Carmichael Company. Through this company, Carmichael also invested in early oil wells in Kern County through his firm, named the Sacramento Oil Company. Mr. Carmichael was an active member of the Democratic Party and, in 1900, was elected delegate to the national Democratic Convention, where a man named 900 William Bryant was nominated for president and once again in 1904 when a man named Alton Parker was selected to lead the Democratic ticket.

Mr. Carmichael elected treasurer for the city of Sacramento was also active in Sacramento politics and was elected treasurer for the city of Sacramento in 1885 and in 1903 he was elected Sacramento County treasurer. Between 1917 and 1719, Mr. Carmichael was elected the mayor of Sacramento. In addition, served as a director for the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce for some 18 years and between 1910 and 1913, was the president of the Chamber of Commerce. His other civic activities included membership in the Sutter Club, Elk, Odd Fellows, and Masons. In 1910, the State Realty Federation of California elected him president of that federation.

Mr. Carmichael married a woman named Myrtle Robbin Sacramento in 1892. Ms. Robb was the daughter of the well-known Railroad man, Charles Robb. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael was on 23rd Street in Sacramento. Apparently, in 1923, Mr. Carmichael left the Sacramento region supposedly traveled to England. However, le survived long enough to reside In San Francisco. In 1936, Mr. Carmichael passed away in San Francisco. He was penniless and 70 years old.

The Maidu Indians were the first known settlers in the region dating back to 1,000 B.C. In the early 1800s, when the white pioneers arrived, they were probably forced to leave the region.

Charles W. and Mary A. Deterding were the first new pioneers to arrive in Carmichael. They bought a 425 parcel of land next to the north bank of the American River. The Deterding Ranch is what is currently known as Ancil Hoffman Park.

One of the seven children whose parents were John and Elizabeth Shields was named Mary. They lived on a farm at Mills Station known then as Hangtown Crossing, and currently known as Rancho Cordova. She married a man named Charles Deterding not long after graduation and attended St. Joseph’s Convent in Sacramento.

Mr. Deterring’s son named Charles served as a judge in Sacramento, and Mary’s brother, named Peter Shields and in the 1940’s, Mr. Deterring’s son, named Charles W. Deterding Jr. functioned as an Executive of the County in Sacramento. Their other son, named J. R. Deterding ran a plumbing supply company and their daughter, Mae, married a man named A. McDonell. These days, The McDonell family still reside in Carmichael.
