About Granite Bay

The undulating countryside of Granite Bay, California was home to some small settlements of the Maidu Indian tribes, long before the region was swamped with prospective gold miners trying to make their fortune. Remnants of the life of the Maidu Indian tribes’ life can be found in the many grinding holes that they used to mash up acorns. Usually, the Maidu grinding holes are located on the top of granite boulders that are somewhat flat. On the Miners Ravine nature Trail, which is located just off Folsom-Auburn Road a nice grinding hole can be seen. Grinding holes can also be located close to the Northern Fork of the American River whenever the water level is low on Folsom Lake.

In 1977, when Folsom Lake was at ever-increasing low water levels ss the result of a drought, the California State Parks did some supplementary research into Native Indian villages in the area. They collected many different artifacts that included atlatls and arrow heads and also documented many different locations. Some of these artifacts were dated back to as early as 1200 AD.

Live oaks are plentiful in the Granite Bay region because it is a distinctive oak savannah woodland. In addition, there are also many different seasonal creeks that run through the region, that include Miners Ravine and Linda Creek. Without the onset of suburban water usage, these streams would basically dry up in the summertime. Two important artesian wells or springs that bubble up water all year round would have been lost to history. Rose Springs is located on the northern side of ridge that is near to the intersection of Eureka Road and Folsom-Auburn Road. A small community was established around this significant resource named Rose Springs. Water flowed westward towards Linda Creek across what is currently known as Folsom-Auburn Road in the direction of Barton Road. The westward flow of Rose Springs was redirected eastward and into Folsom Lake, with the construction of Dyke five of Folsom Dam.

The Pioneer Express Trail Another water source for travelers along the Pioneer Express Trail that transverse the American River’s North Fork was Rock Springs. On the easternmost point of Mooney Ridge, water can be seen bubbling out of Rock Springs in the summertime when the water is low in Folsom Lake. There was also a small community that was established around this spring and when the water in Folsom Lake gets very low the remnants of the Rock Spring house are still visible. As early as 1861, both Rock Springs and Rose Springs can be seen within Folsom Lake and were marked on Placer County maps.

Next to the south and north forks of the American River many different ditches were dug to serve the miners with water with the onset of the Gold Rush. The Ditch on the North Fork began close to Auburn and ran some 13 miles down to Beal’s Bar on the western side of the American River’s North For. Just south of what is currently known as Beal’s Point was the North Fork Reservoir. During the late 1800’s the North Fork Ditch Company constructed the Baldwin Reservoir which is located just west of the Folsom-Auburn Road during the late 1800’s. This reservoir was the start of the supply of water from the Ditch on the Ditch on the North Fork to Citrus Heights, Fair oaks, and Orangevale.

A division of the Ditch on the North Fork ran northward next to Barton Road from Baldwin Reservoir and came to be known as the Rose Springs Ditch. A division known as the Allen’s Ditch, which was also known as George Ditch on some maps was established prior to the Ditch on the North Fork reaching the reservoir above Beal’s Bar. This divisional branch ditch ran up to the Miners Ravine Creek that served locations of properties next to what is currently known as Folsom-Auburn Road. Branches of the Allen’s Ditch would serve properties on both the south and the north side Cavitt–Stallman Road north of Miners Ravine Creek.

It was necessary to terminate the Ditch on the North Fork water canals that serve the homes and farms to the west of the dam because of the intention of the west wing dykes and dam for the Folsom Lake. The reservoir of the Ditch on the North Fork was filled and enclosed by the dam of the west wing. At the foot of the west wing dam, Hinkle Reservoir currently holds the treated water from the San Juan Water District. The Baldwin Reservoir and Dam have been decommissioned. Rose Spring Ditch was extended northward in order to continue serving ditch water to consumers northward of Baldwin Reservoir. In front of Dyke Five and under the Folsom-Auburn there were siphons. Remnants of the extended ditch of the siphon supports can still be seen. The San Juan Water District is the successor of the North Fork Ditch Company. Deliveries of raw ditch water were ended as the result of the siphon pipes being removed and the lack of demand as the water district protracted treated water to more businesses and homes in the Granite Bay region.
