The community of Cameron Park is located just west of Shingle Springs remained undeveloped; the land being used mainly for raising livestock up until the late 1950’s. However, that didn’t mean that this region hadn’t played an important role in the early history of El Dorado County. The fact is the quite the opposite is true.
Numerous prospectors come to this area hoping to make their fortunes in the many small gorges and streams soon after gold was discovered in Coloma. These Argonauts and soon there were other businessmen and merchants, in addition to cattlemen and farmers who would settle in this region.
In 1850, two brothers named William and Steven Elliot constructed the Green Valley Ranch on Green Valley Road. Much the same as the larger houses built during the days of the gold rush, the lumber that was used to build this house was transported from the East Coast of the United States. The short-lived Pony Express, which transported the mail along this route some of the time during the early 1860’s, stopped to change horses just west at the Pleasant Grove House.
A Scotsman named James Skinner came to California to search for gold in 1852. A few years later he bought some land in the Cameron Park region and developed a winery and a vineyard. At his winery, he reportedly produced approximately 15,000 gallons of vinegar and wine. His winery is located on the eastern side of Cameron Park Drive, both south and north of Green Valley Road.
The tracks of the Sacramento Valley and Placerville Railroad reached the close by community of Shingle Springs in 1865. The railroad transported numerous tons of freight daily, most of which was placed on wagons that would be carried by huge teams to what is currently the approximate location of Highway 50, over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the silver mines of the Comstock, close to Virginia City. There are maps that show it reaching Lake Tahoe via a tunnel through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The County of El Dorado still has a toll tunnel authority on the books.
During the late 1860’s. with the development of the transcontinental railroad located some miles to the north, two things happened that affected this region. The first was the railroad acquired from the federal government odd sections of property some ten miles on either side of the tracks, which included parts of the Cameron Park region as part of the agreement to build the transcontinental line. The second was the freight traffic on the roads dropped dramatically.
The population of the region decreased considerably, the mimes had played out, and there wasn’t much traffic on what is currently known as Highway 50 or on Green Valley Roan by the late 1800’s. A significant amount of the property was then in control of only a few owners, which included the Southern Pacific Railroad, Morrison, Rust, Engesser, Wise, Meder, and Skinner.
A man who is the namesake of the community whose name is Robert Cameron purchased many plots of land in the late 1950s, and a unit of five-acre parcels to the south of highway 50 and a number of smaller lots had been established north of Highway 50 by 1961.
At the northeast corner of Cameron Park Drive and Highway 50, the Golf Academy named in honor of Arnold Palmer was established. The Palmer House was as a dormitory for the students and the building that houses the restaurant named the Himalayas was the pro shop. As the result of financial problems, the academy closed after years of operation, and at the location the golf course, the Goldorado Shopping Center was built sometime later.
One of the first aviation-residential subdivisions in California was Air Park Estates, which featured shortened street signs, underground utilities, and extra wide streets, which allowed for the combined use of the streets by vehicles and private aircraft hangers Other similar developments were established as the result of the success this model made.
As the result of the decline in the economic conditions in the Sacramento region, which included a major layoff at Aerojet during the late 1960’s, the development in Cameron Park slowed considerably. However, Dorado Estates created a master plan for Cameron Park when the economy started turning around, which became integrated into the Cameron Park Area Plan in 1981, and later, into the County’s General Plans.
While not all of the properties haven’t yet been built upon, most of the planned units of Cameron Park have been developed. This is a community of various mixed uses, that provides several economic levels of housing, minor and major shopping malls and many different recreational areas for its residents as was intended.
Cameron Park has a rich history and a bright future. Having only starting to be developed in the 1950’s, the community has come a long way. The community of Cameron Park is a wonderful place to live, play, work, visit and raise a family.
We will create a function and elegant kitchen at a price you can afford.
