During the 1850’s, when the gold miners were busy looking for their fortune on the banks if the American River the history of Granite Bay, California began. The name Granite Bay was derived from these Gold miners. Along both sides of the beautiful American River, there were approximately some 37-gold mining. As the result of the planted almond and olive orchards, Granite Bay attracted these gold miners from 1852 through 1954. The Folsom-Auburn Road was one of the primary roads that ran thru Granite Bay. Many old-timers remember this road as the Auburn-Sacramento River Road which originally permitted miners to travel back and forth easily while carrying their supplies.
Cattle ranchers also started using the grassy slopes and water access to raise their cattle, in addition to the gold miners taking advantage of this plentiful landscape. The Folsom-Auburn Road also has a unique and varied history. It began as an ox-cart track that connected the 49’ers mining claims next to the American River. This road also served as a route to move supply to the settlement of Folsom from the settlement of Auburn. The road was also known to be a colon road for bandits to come get rich quickly by stealing money and goods through this road, which was a known supply-line. A man known as Rattlesnake Dick was one of the famous robbers of the time, His nickname was the result of his rapid transition to being a mean and sneaky outlaw from being an honest miner at the Rattlesnake Bar. Sometime later, in 1862, running parallel to this road, located in the Central Pacific Railroad which ran between Folsom and Auburn there was a subdivision in the Central Pacific Railroad.
Granite bay came to be known as Allen’s District during the 1800s. The name Allen’s District was in honor of a man named Hiram Allen; whose family was one who lived on the west end of the road. These days the primary road that runs through the older section of Granite Bay is known as Cavitt Stallman, and the Junior High school was known as Cavitt Jr. High School. Shelborne Estates was one of the primary gated communities in the area. This community was initially a portion of the 450-acre Allen ranch that featured pear, peach, and plum orchards that were located all over the agricultural landscape. Another major crop on the Allen Ranch was olives, which is another reason why the road in Granite Bay is known as the Olive Ranch Road. Eventually the Allen Ranch sold plots for some $50 for each acre back in the 1800’s.
There are some differing opinions regarding the name of Granite Bay. In 1987, prior to Granite Bay being recognized officially as a community that had its own zip code, businesses and homes at the easternmost end of Douglas Boulevard was just a portion of greater Roseville. It was just somewhat a rural region that was on the way to the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area and the Granite Bay Beach. However, Granite Bar has never been listed on any historic maps. Carrolton was the closest gold rush community, which was located at the base of what is currently known as Doton’s Point at Folsom Lake. Granite must have sounded better than naming the area or the park after the Condemned Bar that was located on the other side of the river.
Folsom Lake became a pleasant curved bay that offered a relatively flat beach area after the lake was filled, which was ideal for picnicking and located just north of where the park entrance is where Douglas Boulevard terminates. As the result of the fact that the surrounding soil mainly consists of decomposed granite, the name Granite Bay Beach was given to the region by the California State Parks.
The boundaries for the Granite Bay area can be different between the Community Plan Map for the Counter of Placer and zip code maps. The location of the eastern edge of Granite Bay is on Folsom Lake. The Sacramento-Placer County line is the southern boundary. Sierra College Boulevard is located on the westernmost side, up to where the road intersects with Loomis and Rocklin. The northern border of Granite Bay then runs over to Folsom Lake via north-east over to Horseshoe Bar Road.
Granite Bay doesn’t have its own governing body as the result of its small population. However, the Board of Supervisors for Placer County is the primary governing body, in addition to the Municipal Advisory Council, which provided advice and input and advice to the Board of Supervisors. The community also doesn’t have its own fire department or police force. However, Granite Bay is provided with police and fire department services by the Sheriff’s Department for Placer County.
Granite Bay has a rich history and a bright future. This community is a wonderful place to live, work, play, visit, and raise a family.
