Carmichael, California is located in in the County of Sacramento and is portion of the Roseville-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Area. In 8144, a man named Joel Dedmond received a large land grant from Mexico on the region where Carmichael is currently located. During the early 1900s, a man named Daniel Carmichael purchased approximately 2,000 acres of land in this area. This property came to be known as the Carmichael Colony # 1. At a later date, he purchased additional acreage and named it the Carmichael Colony # 2.
Dan Carmichael separated land up into lots and started selling them off. In 1907, the first pioneers began buying them. Eventually, a business district was established as the region grew. Carmichael was governed by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors because it was an unincorporated community. A man named Daniel Carmichael arrived in California in 1885. With some 2,000 acres from the Mexican Land grant of Rancho San Juan. In 1909, Mr. Carmichael established the Carmichael Colony # 1. Sometime later he was awarded Rancho San Juan from a Mexican land grant. Then, Mr. Carmichael bought an additional 1,000 acres from the Mexican Land grant for the Rancho del Paso, and established the Carmichael Colony # 2. This new colony was bounded by Sutter Avenue to the north, Arden Way to the south, Walnut Avenue to the west, and the first colony to the east.
The population of Carmichael was some 61,762 people according to the census that was taken 2010. The population density of Carmichael was some 4,477.8 people for every square mile. The racial makeup of Carmichael was 11.7% of the population, or 7,218 Latino or Hispanic people of any race, 5.7% percent of the population or 3,493 people of two or more races, 3.3% of the population, or 2,035 people of other races, 0.5% 0f the population, or 287 Pacific Islanders, 4.3%of the population, or 2,653 Asians, 0.9%of the population, or Native Americans, and 5.8% of the population, or 3,972 African Americans, and 80.6% of the population, or 49,776 Whites.
The Census reported that 0.8% of the population, or 505 people were institutionalized, 0.8% of the population, or 467 people resided in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 98.4% of the population or 60,790 people resided in households. The size of the average family was 2.91 people. Some 61.7% of all households, or 16,063 people were families. The size of the average household was 2.33 people. Some 12.9% of the population, or 3,363 people were 65 years of age or older and lived alone. Some 31.0% of the population, or 222 people were in same sex partnerships or marriage. Some 6.3% of the population, or 1,642 people were in unmarried opposite sex partnerships. Some 42.3% of the population, or 11,016 people were married couples of the opposite sex. Some 28,5% of the population, or 26,036 were households, out of which 28.5% of the population, or 7,431 people had children 18 years old or younger living with them. Some 13.9% of the population, or 8,080 people lived alone.
For every 86.1 males there were 100 females 18 years old or older. For every 89.6 males there were 100 females. The median age of the population was 42.4 years old. Some 17.6% of the population, or 10,890 people were 65 years old or older. Some 29.2% of the population, or 18,054 people were aged between 45 and 64 years old. Some 23.3% of the population, or 14,388 people were aged between 25 and 44 years old. Some 8.7% of the population, or 5,370 people were aged between 18 and 24 years old. Some 21.1% of the population, or 13,060 people were under the age of 18 years old.
Some 42.7% of the population, or 26,348 people resided in rental housing units. Some 55.8% of the population, or 34,442 people resided in owner occupied housing units. The rental vacancy rate was 2.3%. Some 44.4% of the population, or 11,564 people were renters. There were 13,224 families, 20,631 households, and 49,742 people living in Carmichael according to the census that was taken in 2000. The population density was 4,622.2 people for each square mile. There were 21,383 housing units at an average density of 1,987.0 for each square mile. The size of the average family was 2.9 people. The size of the average household was 2,36 people. Some 35.9% of the population were non-families. Some 12.9% of the population were female heads of households with no husband present. Some 46.7% of the population were married couples living together. There were 20,631 households out of which 29.4% of the population had children under the age of 18 living with them.
Approximately 9.8% of the population and 6.4% of families lived below the poverty including 4.2% of those 65 years old or old and 12.8% of those 18 years old or older. The income per capita was $26,811. Females had an income $32,265 compared to males who had an income of $ 40,435. The median for a family was $59,002. The median household income was $47,041.
