Woodland, California is located in Yolo County and is the county seat of that county. Woodland is situated some 15 miles northwest of Sacramento. The population of Woodland was some 55,468 people according to the census that was taken in 2010.
In 1851, which was the year after California gained statehood and Yolo County was established a man named Johnny Morris arrived on what is currently known as the corner of Clover and First Streets in what is currently known as the community of Woodland. Some Two years later a man whose name is Henry Wyckoff came to town and opened a store that he named Yolo City.
These white settlers, weather by choice or by accident or established the town of Woodland. They were either remarkably preferred by chance or exercised excellent judgment. Woodland is located on the crest of a rolling hill in about the middle of the county. It wasn’t that long ago when following some unreasonably rainfalls, Woodland y was nearly completely underwater. This left the community virtually an island for most of a day. In addition, Cache Creek, also ran over its banks, blanketed the area to the west and the north of Woodland. Sufficient overflow water was contributed by Willow slough ed enough overflow water to flood the country located to the west and to the south, and the overflow filled the basin to the east of Woodland.
The topographical location of Woodland offers impressive drainage and is primarily the reason for the excellent sanitary conditions, which have always been prevalent in Woodland. There haven’t been but only a few epidemics of any kind in Woodland since it was established. The community of Woodland is regarded as a very healthful place to live.
About this same time a man whose name is Jonas Spect originated the settlement of Fremont and the location is the current location of the city of Woodland, which offers a magnificent grove of widespread beautiful oak trees that are rather densely intermingled with underbrush that is atypical to the conditions of the soil and the climate.
The old records tell have explained that the late Henry Wyckoff was the originator of Woodland. At least it would seem that he was the white pioneer to invade the location in order to establish a place to live. During the winter of 1853 Mr. Wyckoff built a building having a small box frame where Court Street is currently in the community of Woodland and within Woodland a store was established that came to be known as Yolo City. However, it wasn’t long afterwards that the name was forever changed for the more reputable name of Woodland.
A man whose name is A. Weaver was probably the second man to open a business in Woodland. Soon thereafter, Mr. Wyckoff opened a blacksmith shop in the immediate area, However, some about three months later, he either gave it or sold it to a man whose name is James McClure. Sometime later, Mr. McClure disposed of the business to a man whose name is E. R. Moses. For several years, Mr. Moses operated the business.
It is unknown what prompted these white pioneers to come to the wilderness and develop places of business as this hasn’t been clearly explained by the earlier historians. However, from the other information that these earlier historians provided it would seem that in the meantime the interior of the county had been inhabited after being settled by men who were involved in the business of raising cattle and there is little doubt that their movements to and from the community of Washington, which was then the county seat, where it was necessary for them to transact most, if not all, of their business. This is probably the reason that that traveled along the trail that eventually became Woodland. Using their wise foresight resulted in these white pioneers to select the most optimum location for other purposes, such as cattle ranching, and maybe then determined that there was an opportunity for a new settlement, which could be business center and some future developments proved that their intuition was correct because the growth of Woodland was swift.
A carriage building and repair business was opened by a man whose name was Clark Elliott in Woodland in 1856. Some 10 years later, Mr. Elliott improved on his carriage business by construction of a significant brick building. This new building was located approximately some 400 feet just north of what is currently known as Main Street, which is close to the old railroad, which many of the older settlers will remember that Main Street ran practically through the center of Woodland close to the current location of the Byrns hotel.
Meanwhile, or actually in 1856, Mr. Wyckoff constructed a larger structure approximately some 100 feet just east of where the current Main Street school house is located where Mr. Wyckoff stored his stock of merchandise in this more pretentious building. In 1857, Mr. Wyckoff sold his business to a man whose name is F. S. Freeman and traveled out into the country just a few miles to the east, where he built a luxurious house and began farming. The older buildings were replaced by Mr. Freeman with a larger building, which, for a number of years, used as his residence, and which Mr. Chandler occupied for the same purpose for several years.
We will create a function and elegant kitchen at a price you can afford.
