Woodland, California is the county seat of the County of Yolo. According to the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Woodland was some 55,468 people. Woodland is located about some 15 miles northwest of Sacramento.
The year after Yolo County was established and California was admitted to the Union, in 1851, a man affectionally known as Uncle Johnny Morris settled in what is currently known as the corner of Clover Street and First Street and Clover Streets in the settlement of Woodland. A man named Henry Wyckoff arrived some two years later, and established a store that he called Yolo City.
The white pioneers who, by choice, accident or luck established the settlement of Woodland, which is now the county seat of the County of Yolo, were either unusually favored by Chance or exercised excellent judgment. What is currently known as Woodland is located in a prime place, both with regards to its picturesque environment, sanitary condition, surrounding country, and its geographical location.
Woodland had been established on the crest of a gentle knoll in about the center of the county. It hasn’t been long ago when the insight of Fathers of the community or their good fortune, was established when, following some significantly heavy downfalls of rain, Woodland became completely surrounded by water, which left it an island for the better part of one day. The overflow waters of Cache creek, flooded the area to the north and the west of Woodland after having overflowed its banks. A significant amount of overflow water was also contributed by Willow slough, which was enough to overwhelm the country that was located to the west and the south and the overflow in the tule also filled the basin located just east of Woodland.
About this time a man whose name was Jonas Spect developed the settlement of Fremont, which is the current location of Woodland, where there was a splendid grove of widespread majestic oaks that were rather densely intermingled with some underbrush that was specific to the soil and climatic conditions. Beast of the woods and fields, such as panthers, coyotes, antelope, deer and elk were plentiful, as were also smaller members of the animal kingdom, such as doves, quail, and rabbits.
The old records have demonstrated that the late Henry Wyckoff established the settlement of Woodland. In the Mr. Wyckoff constructed erected a building with as small box frame building where it is currently located on Court street in Woodland, during the winter of 1853, and opened a store that he called Yolo City, which was soon changed to Woodland.
Probably the next man to open a business in Woodland was man named A. Weaver. Mr. Wyckoff soon opened a blacksmith shop soon after he opened his first store in the same area. However, around some three months later he either gave it or sold it to a man named James McClure. Then, Mr. McClure disposed of it to a man named E. R. Moses, who, for several years, conducted the business.
In 1856, a man whose name was Clark Elliott developed a carriage factory in Woodland and some 10 years later improved his business by constructing a considerable brick building. This carriage factory was located about some 400 feet north of what is currently known as Main street, close to the old railroad, which, intersected Woodland around about its center, and crossed Main Street near where the Byrns Hotel is still standing.
Mr. Wyckoff constructed a larger building in 1856 approximately 100 feet east of where the Main Street school house is located, and he moved his pretentious stock of merchandise into this new building. In 1857, a man whose name was F. Freeman purchased the business. Mr. Wyckoff relocated out into the country a few miles east, where he built a beautiful home and started farming. Mr. Freeman replaced the old buildings with an even larger building, which he occupied as his residence for several years and then occupied the building for some years and then used it for the same purpose as that by Mr. Chandler.
On the northwestern corner of what is currently known as First Street and Min Street, Mr. Freeman constructed a third building in 1861. This building was a very commodious structure and a very substantial brick building. Mr. Freeman occupied the building which he used as a general merchandise store he bought the building from two men named A. Nicklesburg and Brother, who also occupied it several years. Ever since then it has been occupied for different business purposes by various companies and men and is still the location of business activity. One of the more prominent hardware merchants in Woodland named R. Cranston is its current occupant.
Woodland, California has a bright future and a rich history. Woodland is a wonderful place to live, work, play, visit, and to raise a family.
