Folsom, California is located in the County of Sacramento. It may well be best known for Folsom Lake as well as song Folsom Prison Blues, which was sung By Johnny Cash. According to the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Folsom was some 72,203 people. The median cost of a home in Folsom was some $624,000 and the average income for a household in Folsom was some $102,692.
The name sake of Folsom is a man whose name is Joseph Folsom. The heirs of a San Francisco merchant named William Leidesdorff sold the Rancho de los Americanos to Mr. Folsom. They also laid out the settlement that was to be known as Granite City, which was mainly inhabited by gold miners who were trying to strike it rich in the Sierra Nevada foothills. As the result of the lobbying done by Mr. Folsom to get a railroad to connect this new settlement with Sacramento, the settlement prospered although not many of the miners became wealthy.
In 1855, Mr. Folsom passed away. However. Sometime later the name of Granite City was changed to Folsom in honor of Mr. Folsom. During the 1980’s, the railroad was discontinued but then, in 2005, opened up as again as the terminus of the Sacramento Regional Transit District's Gold Line, which was light railroad service. There are some former gold-rush era communities that were located within the Folsom city limits, that include Salmon Falls, Prairie City, and Mormon Island, even though these communities no longer exist.
When Folsom was first incorporated, it was home to a considerable community of Chinese Americans. However, in 1886, Chinatown in Folsom was burned out by arsonists and the Chinese Americans were forced out of the settlement.
In 1880 when Folsom Prison was built, the Livermore Family reached an agreement with the state that in exchange for prison labor they would donate land for the prison. Their prisoners were to construct a hydro-electric dam from the American River in order to power a sawmill. It wasn’t long before the Livermore Family came to the understanding that running water’s natural force could provide sufficient power to transmit that power to the Folsom Powerhouse and to Sacramento, although the sawmill didn’t work out The Folsom Powerhouse is now a National Historic Landmark. During this time it was put into use, it had the longest run of electricity that was run overhead, which was some 22 miles, in the nation. Up until 1952 the powerhouse was operational.
In 1956 a dam was constructed on Folsom that provided providing much-needed water rights and flood control for the Sacramento Valley. The Folsom dam also resulted in one of the most well-liked lakes in Northern California, which is the Folsom Lake. The southwestern most corner if the lake is where the dam is located. The lake is located approximately 4.8 miles from the southernmost point of Folsom Lake to Granite Bay.

During the days of the gold rush, the area around Mormon Bar and Folsom was placer-mined comprehensively with minor lode mining. I849, the region was initially settled and first came to be known as Negro Bar. What is currently known as Folsom, was laid out by a man named T. Judah in 1855 for the Sacramento Valley Railroad. Between the 1860’s and the 1890’s a number Chinese worked in the area. In 1894, in Natoma, a crude grab-dredger was being used. In 1898, bucket-line dredging started at Folsom and it wasn’t long before it became. a primary industry. The majority of the dredging companies were combined into the Natomas Consolidated of California. Sometime later, this company later came to be known as the Natomas Company, was the primary operator in the district. At the all-encompassing shops that were located in the community of Natoma, this company developed its own dredges. Some 11 active dredges produced over $2, 000, 000 worth of gold in 1916. Natomas was joined by many other operators in dredging the district between 1927 and 1952.
During WW2, dredging operations were halted. However, shortly afterwards, these operations were resumed on a very large. As the result of increasing costs, the changing land values along with the depletion of dredging ground, the dredging operations were gradually ended. There was only one active dredge by 1960, and in 1962. this was shut down. Large parts of the dredged-over areas are currently being used by defense industries, that include the Douglas Aircraft Company and the Aerojet-General Corporation as well as tracts of housing.
