The early pioneers that arrived in the Rocklin, California area were people of Irish descent who were employed by the quarries and the railroad. During the 1870’s, the Chinese also arrived in the region. Around the same time, the Finnish began arriving in droves and continued arriving for another 20 years. In the early 1900’s, the Spanish people arrived in the Rocklin area. Around that same time, the Japanese also arrived in the region. At the same time, more than 50% of the population were people of Finnish descent.
In 1864, the Central Pacific Railroad came to Rocklin and that same year it was extended into Newcastle in. The first loads were loaded onto freight cars in Rocklin, which were quantities of granite that were for use in the building of the roadbed and tunnels as it continued on its way towards Newcastle.
The community of Rocklin overlays a rock that has granite under the entire area. It has never been bored through to determine its thickness. The granite in this region is very hard, and textured and obtainable in large blocks, is used almost exclusively for building and memorial work, and takes a high polish. There have been some 62 separate quarry operations in the Rocklin region and the majority of the quarries can be readily seen. After the Hathaway quarry was in operation, a man named John Taylor opened a quarry around 1867 and the quarry has been in operation ever since. The quarry has had several different the names including the California Granite Company, A Pernu, J. Mantyla, and the current Union Granite Company that is owned and operated by the Ruhkala Brothers. There were around some 30 quarries operating at the same time during the early 1890’s, and several of these were cutting street curbing for some of the larger cities.
Years ago, some of the buildings made with Rocklin granite include the U.S. Mint in San Francisco, the Bank of America, formerly the Bank of Italy, the Monterey Break Water, the Rocklin Butcher Shop, the Rockling City Hall, the Placer County Court House, the Mare Island and Pearl Harbor Drydocks, the Solano County Courthouse, the Stockton Courthouse, the Oakland Auditorium, all county and city jails in Sacramento, the California National Bank, the State Capitol as well as several other buildings. In addition, numerous tons of granite have been used in the maintenance of the Sacramento River Levee.
The real incentive that brought the pioneers to and through the reason was gold, while no large gold deposits were ever located in the Rocklin region. On Secret Ravine Creek, there was some mining for gold. In 1869 once the Central Pacific Railroad was completed, the early gold worked the creek, and the Chinese reworked the gravel beds, particularly in the China Gardens which is located at the end of what is currently known as the China Gardens Road. From 1929 through 1930, the depression brought the gold miners back to the creeks. This was the time period when many pioneers sluiced the gravel in Secret Ravine. These pioneers would make between $1.00 and $3.00 per day, when the average wage was between $1.50 and $2.00 each day. A large gold dredge was located on the Laird Property, which was located in the back of the Lone Pine Ranch at the eastern end of Rocklin Road, which is currently owned by the Hiashida Brothers.
In 1864, once the Central Pacific Railroad came to Rocklin, it provided the residents and easy and rather quick way to travel and hurried the hauling of the building granite to the communities where it was required.
In 1866, The Roundhouse was constructed in time to be used within the community for Rocklin. The reason that it was built here was because this area came was known as the bottom of the Hill. With the roundhouse came the woodsheds next to the track for storing wood that was required for the engine fire in order to make steam power. Along with a gold miner the wood burning engine accounted for many of the current wood free regions. Woodcutters were actively cutting wood that was ultimately amassed next to the tracks in Rocklin. These some 25,000 cords of wood tempted fire and a fire in the area of the woodshed in 1869, which made sufficient smoke that it was seen as far away in Sacramento and in order to help fight the fire they send a fire train.
When a drunk railroad went missing from his job at later found dead and was buried right where he was found the current Rocklin Cemetery was established in 1864.
In 1866, a man named Samuel Trott constructed the Trott Hotel alongside the roundhouse. Because there wasn’t much other housing available and because the hotel was so close, many of the railroad workers lived in the hotel. However, a fire broke out and burned the hotel to the ground when all of the occupants were asleep, late one night in 1869.
We will create a function and elegant kitchen at a price you can afford.
