About Vineyard

Vineyard, California in located in the County of Sacramento. According to the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Vineyard was some 24,836 people which reflects an increase from the 10,109 people that was reported by the census that was taken in 2000. Vineyard also became one of the most racially diverse suburbs in the greater Sacramento area in addition to more than doubling its population in a single decade.

Vineyard planting in California started with the Spanish Franciscan Missionaries beginning with the first mission in California, which was the Mission San Diego de Alcalá in 1769. So that on Palm Sunday there would be palm fronds and so few palm trees were planted. The vineyards were planted in order to provide wine for communion. That first variety, which was planted by a Father named Junípero Serra, became so universal that it came to be known as the Mission grape and, until 1880, was the foremost variety of grapes.

Originally, Southern California was the hub of commercial production. However, between 1848 and 1855, the California the Gold Rush brought with it an influx of people to Northern California. The population of San Francisco increased to some 25,000 people from 1,000 people in the single year of 1848. The demand for wine also increased significantly as the gold miners were constantly thirsty. These days, the wine hubs in Northern California are, among several others, are Sonoma County, El Dorado County, and Sutter County. The vineyards were first planted during the years of the gold rush. The flourishing wine industry in California was exported wines all around the world and as far away as Asia, England, Central America, and Australia by the 1900’s.

However, as the result of the ratification of the 18th amendment to the U.S, constitution in 1919, which, while not banning the passion or consumption of alcohol, declared the sale of alcohol of alcohol illegal, the progress was quite literally brought to a stop. A loophole in the law permitted each household each home to make some 200 gallons of nonintoxicating fruit juice and cider each year. As a result, numerous Americans started making their own wine at home. The price of grapes increased because there were numerous new amateur winemakers. In order to meet the continuous requests for wine, growers ripped out their best wine variants and replaced them with lower quality grape varieties, which were better suited for shipping.

The once thriving wine industry was devastated by the time probation was repealed in 1933. Between 1919 and 1925, production had decreased to some 94%. There were over some 2,500 commercial wineries in the U.S. prior to 1920, and fewer than 100 survived prohibition. The program in Enology and Viticulture at the University of California at Davis was started as in an attempt to rejuvenate the wine industry. One of the first facility members to become an employee in this recently established department was a man named Maynard Amerine. Even with the help of the tireless work of Mr. Armine’s advising, traveling, and writing, as well as wine making experts at the University of California at Davis the turn-around was slow. That number of 100 had only increased to some 271 by 1960. It would take over 50 years for the California winemaking to return to its volume during the pre-prohibition era.

The small group of Northern California winemakers were dedicated to developing the winemaking industry in California that would be competitive on an international level. However, winemakers had a difficult time with marketing even after high-quality wines started being produced. The year 1976 was the turning point for the California wine industry, when California wine producers entered their wines in a blind taste test to compare California wines with French wines. The judging panel was entirely French. However, it came as a real surprise when the California wines were ranked the highest in both of the competition categories which were the reds and the chardonnays categories. Time Magazine reported the results of what came to be known as the Judgment of Paris. As a result, the demand for California wines from California increased significantly. These days, California is well-known for making some of the best wines in the world, and still today, those competition wines are still being produced.

There are a visionary group of forward-thinking winemakers who take it upon themselves to fund the Lodi Wine grape Commission in Lodi, California, where almost some 20% of grapes from California are grown. Out of their desire to farm wine grapes that will meet the current requirements, the growers of this Commission established the motto Lodi Rules. This was done in a way that won’t compromise the capability of future generations to develop their own wine-making livelihoods. The Lodi Rules Sustainable Winegrowing Program is the end result of numerous years of input from environmentalists, scientists, and farmers, as well as viticulture research, and it continues to improves as it evolves.
