Ever since the Post Office in the County of Placer opened at this location in 1861, the name of the settlement of Loomis has been renamed several times. In 1862, the name Placer changed to Smithville in 1862, and in 1869 the name Smithville was changed to Pino, and finally in 1890, the name Pino was changed to Loomis.
A man named James Loomis, was a postmaster, and express agent, a railroad agent, ands saloon keeper was the namesake of the settlement of Loomis. The year 1984 brought the formal incorporation of the County of Placer. Until then the settlement remained a portion of the unincorporated County of Placer. Until residents voted to incorporate the community in order to preserve its small-town character and unique culture, Loomis was at risk of being annexed by its larger adjacent neighbor, which is the community of Rocklin.
