In 1848, when gold was discovered at nearby Coloma there were a number of settlements that were established and was Placerville, California. A man named James Marshall was constructing a sawmill the man that he was working for whose name was John Sutter. While building the sawmill, Mr. Marshall located a gold flake in the tailrace of the sawmill. It wasn’t long before he reported the gold to Mr. Sutter who swore Mr. Marshall, and all of his employees to secrecy. However, this kind of news simply couldn’t be kept a secret, and before long word of the newly found gold leaked and numerous prospective miners were crawling around the hills and the ravines and hills looking to strike it rich.
In 1848, Located on what is currently known as the Hangtown Creek banks, which is located some ten miles from Coloma, new gold camps were being established. One of these camps was called Dry Diggins as the result of the way that the gold miners had to haul wagonloads of dry soil on order to have running water in order to isolate the dirt from the gold. This camp, was of the first of many small settlements that were established in the Coloma area, and wasn’t much more than a tent city.
However, when a man named Colonel Richard Mason, who was the Military Governor of California reported to President Polk, and explained that the gold camps were moving a fortune in gold, the settlement was booming and soon came to be a hub for transportation and central supply in the region.
Much the same as other settlements that had mining camps and hell raising men in the Old West, it wasn’t long before it had a reputation for raising hell as well. With opportunity at hand, the camp became the home to thieves, deserters, fugitives, road agents, and murders in addition to gold miners. However, these less than desirables had no intention of on making their wealth by doing back-breaking labor. They preferred to use a gun or a knife to get their gold. In the gold mines, crime had become a serious by late 1848. At that time California was under the jurisdiction of Mexico and with the military governor of California declaring martial law, and a such American forces occupied the area. There were no prisons, courts, jails, police, or laws.
Playing a primary role in the establishment of the American frontier government based on American Jurisprudence and on democracy was the gold miner. 1849, the first California miner’s court was convened at the Old Dry Digging. One of the men stood accused of attempted murder, while four of the men arrested committed a previous robbery.
The courts were established to arbitrate disputes with regard to claims disputes among the miners and they also heard criminal cases usually after some barbarity had occurred. The case at the Old Dry Diggings provided some prompt punishment for the outlaws in 1849. The three men who were convicted of armed robbery received a sentence of expulsion from the mines as well as some 39 lashes each. The two men who were convicted for attempted murder were hung. A giant oak tree that was located on the main street of the settlement was often preferential for hanging. After the hanging, the gold camp was named Hangtown in 1849.
Many of other gold mining camps left the area as well. This left nothing of places such as Murder’s Bar, Georgia Slide, and Bottle Hill. However, Placerville was bound and determined to survive. The community turned to light manufacturing agriculture, and lumber. The year 1900 brought the reincorporated of Placerville.
These days, the population of Placerville is around some 10,000 residents who thoroughly enjoy this historic gold rush community, with its wealth of historical markers, and the history of its numerous old buildings. One of the more interesting places to visit is the Cary House Hotel, which was constructed in 1857, and continuously caters to traveler.

These days, a customer can still buy cast iron skillets, knives, and gold panning equipment, at this historic hardware store, much the same as those miners did over a 150 years ago.
An 1895 Queen Anne Mansion, known as the Combellack-Blair House, is on the National Register of Historic Places and still serves as a bed and breakfast inn. Located at 524 MainStreet is the original soda works building that dates back as far as 1852. The Fountain-Tallman Museum at 524 MainStreet.
