About Antelope

Antelope, CA started its humble existence as a settlement town in the middle of the 1800s; and it was established by Chinese immigrants employed by the railroad.

The workers prospered and took pleasure in their boomtown at an age in which neighborhoods were the fundamental building blocks of communities. But since Antelope, CA was never a trade center, the railroad employees who lived there ultimately relocated to the next county and were instrumental in establishing Roseville as a viable city.

The abandoned Antelope, CA settlement was finally reduced to the status of a location rather than a community. Although, Antelope, CA's longest border is still against the Placer-Sacramento County line. It is snuggled against the Southern Pacific Railroad lines just south of the Roseville switching yard, hidden away in northern Sacramento County.

With its soft hills that seem to function as a barrier against the increase coming from the south, Antelope, CA has become the center of growth in Sacramento County. However, the south-western corner of Placer County is still an undeveloped property that affords a vista to the foothills of Rocklin and farther beyond.

Although Sacramento County has physically grown up to the county boundary of Placer County. Meanwhile, Placer County has not. The view to the north reveals golden hills and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, in contrast to the vista to the south, which provides views of the Sacramento cityscape and McClellan Air Force Base.

Antelope, CA has a strong sense of community and identity because of the proximity of its housing developments to a grazing pasture for cattle. Antelope, CA is still known as a bedroom neighborhood even in modern times. But in contrast to the railroad employees who used to play cards on Poker Lane, the neighborhood people now travel to Roseville, Sacramento, Davis, and other cities in the Bay Area. Antelope, CA was a place that was scarcely worthy of note on April 28, 1973, when it just consisted of a post office, general store, and a half-dozen dwellings. However, at 8:03 one morning, a rail car filled with aircraft bombs detonated in the southern portion of the Roseville switchyard, erasing any evidence of Antelope, CA from the area.

The railway's destination was Port Chicago in Contra Costa County, and its manifest included tanker cars carrying liquid petroleum and 7,000 Mark 81 aircraft bombs, each weighing 250 pounds. Additionally, the train was carrying Mark 81 aircraft bombs.

The concussions caused by the explosions at the Southern Pacific yard could be felt in downtown Sacramento, where the state Capitol building is located. Due to worries that the dome would tilt due to the concussions, the Capitol building was closed.

However, despite Governor Ronald Reagan's declaration of a state of emergency for the region, the town of Antelope, CA was reduced to burned wood and concrete slabs. Although no one was injured or killed due to the explosions, the bomb caused property damage of $7 million, including damage to the train yard and residences and businesses between Roseville and North Highlands.

In the late 1990s, Union Pacific took possession of the Roseville Railyard, which another company had previously owned, and immediately began a comprehensive renovation of the whole railyard. Earth-moving equipment was used to start reshaping the yard after miles of rails and ties were removed.

The bulldozers wasted no time unearthing the unexploded bombs that had been left behind after the catastrophe in 1973. During many months, the location in question was scanned, investigated, and finally deemed risk-free before being reexamined in light of the ongoing discovery of explosives.

The first few explosives that were found were detonated on the scene, which resulted in a loud explosion that could be heard for miles around and bomb shards flying into the houses of those living in Citrus Heights.

As additional explosives were found, and as more irate locals grumbled about having to detonate the devices, the remaining munition was moved to the Bay Area and given to a business that disposes off weapons.

UP has concluded the reconstruction of the railyard, which has been pronounced safe, and there have been no more explosions - at least not yet. Antelope, CA had a referendum in May of 1993 to determine whether or not it should be recognized as a community, which would provide it both status from the county and its zip code.

The vote was decisive, which is only one illustration of the strong sense of community among the neighbors. During that time, Antelope, CA was solely known as an unincorporated community in Sacramento County with the zip code of 95842. The zip code was first formally recognized on July 1, 1994, when it was issued by the United States Postal Service in Washington, District of Columbia.
