In 1843, the Rancho Del Paso grant was transferred by a man named John Sutter from the Governor of Mexico. Then, John Sutter turned over the deed to the Rancho Del Paso to two men named Hiram and Eliab Grimes and a man named John Sinclair. The following owner of the Rancho Del Paso was a man named Samuel Norris. After him the Rancho was owned by a man named James Haggin. Between the years 1862 and 1905, the Rancho was taken over to man named James Ben Ali Haggin who became renowned for breeding race horses. One of the many horses that was bred that on the Rancho, named Ben Ali, won the 12th Kentucky Derby in world record time. Mr. Haggin constructed a railroad track in order to ship his horses, which went northeastward towards the what is currently known as the tracks for the railroad for Union Pacific that are situated just northeast of what is currently known as the Capitol City Freeway next to Arcade Boulavard. At this location, the staff for Mr. Haggin constructed some 24 barns that each had 64 stalls in addition to some other out buildings. It was at this location that Mr. Haggin would ship his horses primarily to Kentucky, with some others shipping around the world eventually.
The name of Arden might have come from the Hebrew word that means garden. It is also possible that the name Arden came from the region in Minnesota known as Arden Hills. This location was the home of a man named Orlando Robertson. The name of Arcade might have come from the location that was close to the barns that Mr. Haggin owned located next to Arcade Blvd, where there was an Arcade of native oak trees. Although some of these trees are nothing but dead stumps, there are still some remnants that remain. An Arcade in architecture is some number of arches that support a wall. Therefore, the result is the second name, Arcade. Being a land speculator, Mr. Orlando Robertson came to Sacramento after hearing about the extraordinary properties around the Rancho Del Paso. In 1905, Mr. Robertson purchased the Rancho for $1.5 million for his Sacramento Colonization Company. He then developed the tracts complete with streets for sale. Mr. Robertson elected to use street names that represented the inventors of the period, such as Bell, Howe, Edison, and Watt.
The Del Paso Country Club, which was constructed in 1919, and the Arden Middle School, which was constructed in 1914 are just two of the oldest surviving structures in the region. As the city developed over the water, between the 1920’s and the 1930’s, the first residential neighborhoods in the region were built. However, the actual building boom arrived after the end of World War II. These days, what is currently known as the community of Arden-Arcade was established from 1945 through 1970. Arden-Arcade remains a great demonstration of a midcentury, middle-class modern community. Mr. Randolph Parks, Mr. Jere Strizek, and Mr. John Davis are the three men who are primarily responsible for the home developments. There are also large custom-built developments that have homes scattered around as well as office complexes that were constructed by Mr. John Carter, the Streng Brothers, and Mr. Carter Sparks.
Located in Arden-Arcade in an indoor shopping mall named the Country Club Plaza. A new theater is having been constructed complete with restaurants. Like so many of the middle century shopping malls, this mall has undergone considerable changes. In 1958, the Plaza opened that offers a Weinstock’s Lubin department store, a Woolworth, a Gourmet Lane, and a Stop and Shop market. These days, the Weinstock's building is still in its original middle century glory, and would make a great location for multiple offices and restaurants and a wonderful location for an antique mall. A man named Charles Luckman designed the structure, which includes hardwood flooring from Kentucky as well as imported Italian marble.
Another primary shopping venue in the Arden-Arcade region are automotive dealers. Arden-Arcade has maintained several valuable automobile dealerships that are unique to the Sacramento region, in spite of the increased competition from auto malls in Elk Grove, Roseville, and Folsom. Although some automobile dealerships have relocated to Auburn Boulevard in order to be seen from the Capital City Freeway, the majority of the automobile remains on Fulton Avenue. Some other automobile dealerships are located as far west as Howe Avenue which is closer to the Arden Fair Mall. Several of the automobile dealerships in this region that include Land Rover, Volkswagen, Mini, Maserati, BMW, and Audi are owned by the Niello family.
