Fair Oaks, California is located in the County of Sacramento. According to the 2010 census the population of Fair Oaks was some 30,912 people, which is an increase from the 200 census which reported a population of some 28,008 people.
For a minimum of some 10,000 years Native Indians known as the Maidu tribe inhabited this area. The region was also inhabited by miners of the gold rush in Northern California about 50 years prior to the start of the settlement. From then on, a few families settled in the region currently known as Carmichael, Citrus heights, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale.
Before long families from the Midwest and the East Coast were reading various advertising brochures, magazines, and newspapers flaunting Fair Oaks as a semi-paradise just waiting for both the gentle and serious farmer to effortlessly enter this utopian existence and retire or make a good living without worry. Success awaited anybody who would simply take a chance because an electric railroad was planned, water was plentiful, and the soil was fertile.
Excursion trains brought the prospective colonists to Sacramento from Chicago to see the region, and then on to Folsom and through the orange groves in Orangevale and then end their trip in the Fair Oaks bluffs. Some years later along with some influential residents of fair Oaks, the Fair Oaks Development Company was able to convince the County of Sacramento to construct a bridge to span the American River. The company then convinced the Southern Pacific Railroad to construct a railroad line to the new Fair Oaks Bridge from the existing Sacramento-Placerville line.
Next, the development company brought in 28-inch steel water mains with several laterals to improve the water system. Fair oaks had a reasonable chance of a bright future with these improvements. Unfortunately, the Fair Oaks Development Company couldnt generate sales, and the company gave up its efforts by 1902.
However, as a community Fair Oaks started blooming around this time. A block of businesses that had excellent architecture was finished and a real school had been established. Various stores and a lumber yard opened. An agricultural cooperative was developed. Several exceptional homes were constructed. A bank opened. A rock crushing plant was flourishing from the gold dredge tailings and dredging for gold in the American River had started on a large scale.
In the early 1900s, Fair Oaks was flourishing. However, a destructive freeze dealt the agricultural community a devasting blow in 1932. Not only did this freeze wipe out any dreams of farming or commercial success, but also, the were many merchants and orchardists who were struggling during the early phases of the Great Depression. Many had to find a different way to support themselves while a few struggled on. Many could travel to other locations for work as the result of improvements in transportation. Along with the later boom in aerospace, the development of air bases in close by North Highlands and Rancho Cordova attracted a new breed of residents, several of whom made their living by working for concerns outside the community.
Life in Fair Oaks was changed forever as the result of these event. However, remainders of almond and olive orchards and orange groves still remain. Many layers of remodeling hide some of the original buildings in Fair Oaks. The Fair Oaks town center is known as the Village of Old Fair Oaks. Also located in this part of the community is the Amphitheater at the Veterans Memorial. The Theater Festival at Fair Oaks is one of the events that take place here. Every September the annual Fair oaks Chicken Festival and the Fair Oaks Car Show and Fiesta take place. The community also has a population of approximately 200 chickens.
The Fair Oaks History is al located in the town center and includes the development, founding, and history of Fair Oaks and include displays that feature artifacts and photographs that date back to the early 1900s, in addition to a small collection of artifacts from early Maidu Indians. A hot summer Mediterranean climate is experienced by Fair Oak, which is characterized by dry, hot summers and mild, wet to damp winters. Usually, the wet season is runs between October and April, although there might be a couple of days of light rainfall in June or September. The mean annual normal temperature is 61.0 °F, with the monthly daily average temperature that ranges from 75.5 °F in July to 46.4 °F in December. A sea breeze frequently moderates the summer heat. This sea breeze known as the delta breeze which comes from the San Francisco Bay through the San Joaquin, Sacramento River Delta and cools down temperatures abruptly at night. January and December are the foggiest months. Tule fog can lower visibility to less than 100 feet and be extremely dense, which can make driving conditions especially hazardous. Other events that have been known to last for many weeks or day are the chilling Tule fogs. Temperatures never exceed 50 degrees during Tule fog events.
