Rancho Cordova is one of the cities in Sacramento County, California. It is a part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area and became an incorporated city in 2003. Rancho Cordova is also a Census Designated Place and spans 33.9 square miles with 33.5 square miles of land and 0.4 square miles of water. The city of Rancho Cordova is at an elevation of 89 feet above sea level.
During the gold rush period, around 1855, the city of Rancho Cordova was known as either Hangtown crossing or Mayhew’s crossing. The city was eventually named after the Cordova vineyard sitting in the middle of the Rancho Rio de Los Americanos land grant. The city bore other names, including Cordova Village and Cordova Vineyard, before it was eventually named Rancho Cordova in 1955 when a post office opened in the city. The city was later renamed Mayhew Station and then Mills Station in 1990.
There were several mining activities in the Rancho Cordova surrounding during the California gold rush in the mid-nineteenth century, of which some of the relics are still present to date. There is still evidence of the old grist mills along the American River at the top of Bradshaw. The presence of old grist mills sitting along the River earned the city another name in 1893. The town was called Mills, and the name stuck for several years.
