The history of Roseville, California got its start as the result of the famous California Gold Rush when disgruntled potential gold miners relocated to begin farming next to the rich creek bottom lands that had been previously ignored from the mineral areas. These fearless pioneers established what was to become as the first families of Roseville. One of the first portions of the southwestern County of Placer to be established was the fertile rich lands of the District of Dry Creek.
A man named Martin Schellhous was one of the early white pioneers of the District of Dry Creek, who arrived in California with his wife and purchased a 240-acre ranch. Mr. Schellhous decided to raise some cattle after having purchasing a number of cattle from Michigan
Sometime later Mr. Schellhous expanded and diversified his agricultural investments and the he planted fields of grain, orchards, and vineyards on his land. Prior to him passing away in 1960, his youngest son named Earl recalled that their vineyards and apple orchard were some of the first in the western County of Placer. In 1873 Mr. Schellhous passed away when he was aged 54. His wife survived him by some 33 years, and died in 1906. Their children subdivided up the ranch and continued to farm the family property. The last of the surviving Schellhous boys was named Earl Schellhous who ran cattle on the old home ranch until he died. This made the Schellhous ranch one of the earliest ranches to operate continuously in the region at the time.
A man named Thomas Dudley was conducting in business in Sacramento. Mr. Dudley married a woman named Eleanor Stuart while he was in Sacramento and then engaged himself in the business of raising hogs. Mr. Dudley and his wife relocated to the District of Dry Creek in order to avoid some steep competition from other markets.
As the result of the over-abundance of acorns, hogs could be sold profitably for 0.25 cents a pound, which other shipping businesses in competition couldn’t match. In the District of Dry Creek Mr. Dudley bought Gifford Poor’s squatter claim for some $200 and then was awarded a government grant for an extra 320 acres. The size of the total ranch was some 710 acres by 1878. The first schoolhouse in Roseville was in a small barn on the Dudley ranch that was established in 1865.
However, in 1879, the family home was completely destroyed by fire. This tragic event was followed shortly thereafter with the death of Mr. Dudley. The ranch that was positioned next to Dry Creek continued to operate by the hands of two of his sons-in-laws, named Alvah Sprague and Robert Theile.
A man named Josiah Gould was another white settler who wanted to ranch the District of Dry Creek. In the early 1850’s, Mr. Gould traveled north to the District of Dry Creek and eventually established a ranch that extended through what would later be bounded by the Walerga Roads and Dry Creek.
Having established title to his original ranch properties, In1854, Mr. Gould brought his family to California from Pennsylvania via the overland route and started some 125 years of occupancy, uninterrupted. The backbone for the ranches during that time period proved to be livestock and grain prior to the time when wide-scale irrigation permitted for the growth of many different fruits such as grapes.
However, farming in a large scale isn’t practiced any longer on the Gould lands primarily because the majority of their once massive holdings have been sold off. These days, these are the locations where modern subdivisions have been built. Mr. Arthur Gould was the last man to vigorously farm the familial lands and, in 1881, he was born on the ranch that his family owned, and in 1976, he passed away there.
He worked continually as a gardener and a rancher for over some 70 years up to a few short months prior to his death. These days. A number of the Gould family members live in and around the Roseville region.
In 1855, which was the year after Mr. Josiah Gould arrived in Roseville, a man named Tobias Grider purchased some 640-acres of land that the government had owned where the railroad switching facilities in Roseville would later come to be located. In 1859, the California Central Railroad purchased the land that Mr. Grider had owned. This was when the Railroad was in the process of extending the iron railroad tracks between Lincoln and Folsom. In 1861, Mr. Girder came back to the local region after relocation to North San Juan, in the County of Nevada for some time. However, it wasn’t long before Mr. Girder left for southern California in 1862 where he spent the majority of the years that he had remaining. In 1886, he passes away in Downey, California.
We will create an elegant home addition at a price you can afford.
